There are some odds that you’ll have to go for a big raise to make a steal. That’s a given, however. If you’re in late position and no one before you has shown any interest in the hand, go for it. If you’re small and act last, you have far less information than your opponents who act before you, and you may fold a hand that you could’ve made a raise with.

If you’re going to bet, you should do so aggressively. Betting puts pressure on your opponents to fold, and a raised pot is a signal that you have a strong hand. When you bet, and your opponents fold, you take the pot. It doesn’t matter if you hit the flop or not, when you bet out, you win.

You don’t always make a big raise, though. Sometimes, you can bet the minimum and still end up getting your opponent to fold. For instance, you’re in early position, and no one before you has bet at all. You decide to call the blind, and see the flop. When the flop comes down, you have middle pair, so you bet out. Now, other players can get excited, and a bet can be made, which will forcing them to fold, if they didn’t in fact hit the flop.
